Having spent over twenty five years in enterprise field I have a vast array of business development skills. My focus has always been on social and community ventures - businesses which have a social purpose at their core - but the misconception about the 'third sector' is that they are 'not for profit' and therefore, somehow, not 'real' businesses. They are. In fact they have to be even more 'business-like' in their operation than conventional businesses. The term 'not for profit' is misleading, inferring that social businesses operate at a loss, or rely heavily on grant funding. ALL businesses need to generate a profit. The fundamental difference between a social enterprise and a 'normal' business is the way in which the profit is distributed. In a conventional business profit is usually either reinvested in the business or, more often, distributed to shareholders as 'dividends'. Community businesses have to reinvest ALL of their profit into the core activity of the venture OR fund similar ventures. So, the term 'not for profit' should really be 'not for bonuses' or 'not for distribution to shareholders'
